On the last day of the 19^th Convention, delegates voted on Convention Resolutions, and elected the new CIU National Executive, Human Rights Representative, Young Workers Representative, and Alternates:

19th National Convention — First Day

July 8, 2021, was the first day of CIU’s 19^th National Convention. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was also the first day of our union’s first ever virtual convention, with the CIU National President, Jean-Pierre Fortin, chairing the meeting from the studio in Ottawa, and all delegates attending virtually.

Despite these unusual circumstances, delegates were keen to take on Convention business, and had the opportunity to hear reports from the National President as well as from CIU National Representatives. We were also glad to welcome PSAC National President Chris Aylward for the opening address, as well as FB national negotiator Morgan Gay.

19th National Convention – July 8, 9 and 10, 2021

The National Convention, which is the supreme governing body of our Union, is held once every three years and provides an opportunity for all CIU members to become involved in the operation and future of their Union. Although the Convention initially planned for October 2020 had to be postponed, we are pleased to announce that the event has been rescheduled to July 2021. Given the pandemic, the event will be held virtually.

(Please note: Convention Resolutions pertaining to collective bargaining must refer only to the procedure of bargaining and not actual bargaining demands. Bargaining demands are sought through a different forum and are referred, through the Component Collective Bargaining Committee, to the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Bargaining demands will not be dealt with at the CIU National Convention.)

COVID-19: Postponement of 2020 National Convention & Branch Elections

Last week, the CIU National Board of Directors (NBoD) met virtually to address the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on our upcoming National Convention. Taking into account current public health considerations, the CIU NBoD voted to postpone the October 2020 National Convention to 2021.

As our union’s supreme governing body, the National Convention plays a crucial role every three years in ensuring our organization is a vibrant and democratic one. The NBoD agreed to postpone the Convention so it could take place in a safe environment while upholding the participatory principles that are important to our members. While the current term is being extended to 2021, the usual schedule will resume thereafter and subsequent conventions will be held in 2023 and 2026.

The postponement of the National Convention also impacts our Branch Elections, which were scheduled for this fall. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Branch Elections will now take place in 2021.

Information posted on the CIU national website will be amended to reflect the revised dates. As the current situation remains uncertain, dates could still change should there be new developments. We will make sure to keep you informed as things progress.
